Introduction

  • Leading for Value is an initiative of the Virginia Community Healthcare Association designed to help all Virginia CHCs optimize the value they deliver for their key stakeholders.
  • As one element of Leading for Value, the CHC Value Toolkit provides practical steps and tools for defining and communicating the value of your CHC for specific stakeholder groups. This process of defining and communicating value can be used repeatedly to advance the strategic objectives of your organization.
  • Use the Quick Start Guide to streamline your design process and optimize your results.
  • Explore the other tabs for examples and resources to help you optimize your communication strategies.

Considerations for How to Use this Toolkit

  • This is an extensive but efficient toolkit designed to meet the needs of a large, diverse group of health centers.
  • Please note that we are not suggesting you work to adapt all of the templates all at once. The Toolkit is intended as a menu from which to select what you want to work on.
  • Use the Quick Start Guide to select one audience, a defined set of messages, and one communication product. Start there. You may decide to create more products later on, but we recommend getting one right first.
  • Please note that we leveraged the Uniform Data System (UDS) 2018 data submitted by the 26 Virginia FQHCs to create a starting set of individual and summary dashboards. However, this Toolkit may be used by all 30 community health centers operating within Virginia or even those beyond Virginia, as the templates and dashboards could be adapted by organizations who have access to similar data indicators within their internal records.

Streamline your communication development by starting with one of the following templates.

For each template we provide an example in PDF format, a PowerPoint version that you can customize for your own CHC, and a guide to adapting the template for your organization.

These visualizations already contain Virginia FQHC data for the 26 FQHCs who submitted UDS 2018 data, and are provided for use as-is.

You may explore the visualization by clicking on the image. At your option, you may also add this visualization to your website by clicking the “Share” icon and copy/pasting the embed code into a page on your website.

Consider whether including certain community data indicators would bolster your communication

You may need some community data to help make the value case for your CHC in certain communications. Our team is here to help in locating prevalence or incidence data for your service region, based on specific requests. The purpose of these community data is to show prevalence or incidence of certain health conditions and behaviors in the community (outside your CHC walls).

An example set of indicators is listed below for Virginia, but this list is not exhaustive. A comparable set, including additional indicators, could be provided for your service area.

Consider whether including economic impact analysis would bolster your communication to the audience member/group you plan to target

You may wish to include economic impact analysis as part of your value case for your CHC in certain communications. Our team is available to calculate economic impact for your CHC.

How is Economic Impact Calculated?

In addition to providing health services for vulnerable populations in our communities, health centers support their local economy. They do this by spending dollars on goods and services from businesses (local and non-local) and This direct spending by a Health Center has a ripple effect in the local economy, as illustrated in the graphic below.

This ripple effect can be defined as the estimated additional economic activity generated in the community as a result of the direct spending by a Health Center. Elements of the ripple effect include local spending by Health Center employees and additional spending by local businesses for employee compensation and purchases of goods and services. The total economic impact is calculated as the sum of direct spending and the ripple effect.wages/benefits for their employees.

As you brand your communication products (e.g. add your logo and color scheme) you may wish to substitute different icon/graphics or colors than those in the adaptable templates

The templates and visualizations within the CHC Value Toolkit were created using a specific color scheme and include various icons and graphics. As you customize the templates for your CHC, you may wish to use the icons and graphics in your materials.

  1. Click here or the image below to download a PowerPoint file that contains the color scheme, logos, and graphics. We also include a grey-scale version of the icons, in case your organization would like to use its own colors and branding.
  2. You may already have your own stock images to use in communication products. One additional resource for free stock images is Pexels.
  3. Additional photos and images will be added over time to this page.
